I’ll never let go Jack. I’ll never let go.”

I consider myself a film buff, but Titanic (1997) is the only movie I have paid to see three times in a theater. No small feat, considering the damn thing is 194 minutes long! I don’t have to tell you what sitting on a cinema chair for more than 3 hours does to your buttocks…

Most will agree that James Cameron created a great piece of entertainment that year, but what kept me coming back wasn’t the gorgeous cinematography or the visual tour de force. It was the fact that a few months before, I had fallen in love, and I too felt like I was the king of the world. See, I could relate to our two protagonists and was deeply moved by their story.

No matter the reason why we go to the movies – to have a good time, to escape reality, or to be inspired – the experience becomes really meaningful when somehow we are touched by what is unfolding on the big screen, and just like in real life, we want to celebrate those moments.

Which brings me to the 70th Academy Awards; Titanic went home with 11 Oscars that night. As Good As It Gets won both Best Actor and Best Actress accolades. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck became household names after winning Best Screenplay for one of my best movies of all time, Good Will Hunting. What a celebration indeed.

Entertainment aside, what makes Oscar night so special is when our favorite movie wins or an outstanding performance that deeply moved us is recognized. We too are right there on stage making a speech, because we all have something to say and want to be heard, no matter what vehicle is used.

Swipp will be watching on February 24th, but most importantly, we want to hear what you have to say. Each day this week we will be featuring the nominees for Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Actor and Actress, Best Director and Best Picture. You can be part of the action by logging into swipp.com and give your opinion on that ugly dress, funny bit or who should win best picture (*cough* Silver Linings Playbook *cough*).

It’s the Oscars! Make your picks, take the ride, and let the world know why winning that ticket is the best thing that ever happened to you.
