Digital Days

by Dayse on May 22, 2013 · 0 comments

Today we have portable tools that less than a generation ago were considered science fiction. In fact, most people today have a handheld device that has a CPU that is at least 15X faster than a super computer in 1979. These devices, along with the Internet – “the cloud,” social graphs and the associated “App Economy,” continuously change how we interact with each other and the world around us.

With nearly 50 billion downloads on iOS alone, we have applications for a range of uses that allow us learn a foreign language or train for a marathon or even play a fun game of Angry Birds. However; for most of us, the passive consumption of these apps and data is not sufficient enough in this rapidly changing digital world. In fact, many of us are concurrently active creators of data and content as we take pictures, write emails, text and share lists, as well as share a multitude of new experiences, which can all be done while in line at the bank or on the train.

Let’s take a look at how we are shopping. It is becoming rare that someone goes to a store for a product or service without conducting some preliminary research through the use of technology. However; one can also do his due diligence dynamically – right on the spot. In many cases, retailers and consumer goods companies  are not selling, but finding ways to keep up with the change in demand and sentiment of its customers.

Our decisions are more informed than ever – via apps on IP enabled devices that deliver a variety of data, analysis, sentiment and critiques about our lives. How we socialize, work and behave has radically changed in less than 5 years as a function of social, mobile, data and cloud technologies and the trend is accelerating.

How are you using technology now? What do you think will come next?

Google Developers Event Held In San Francisco

The Google I/O Developer Conference in San Francisco, CA was not flashy, but quite informative.  The presentation covered updates on almost all of Google’s products, reviewed statistics on its applications and CEO Larry Page even took the stage and answered questions.

Here is all you need to know – A breakdown from the Conference

 Google+

Google+ is the gateway to the universe, and the company hopes that this social network will entice people to join, as you need a Google+ account to use most of its services, including registering for the Google I/O Developer Conference.

  • Competing with Facebook
    • Google +  has a new design and can be used on your mobile, tablets or computers.
    • You can even call it beautiful, as improvements include streams of activity that are laid out in one or multiple columns of tiles and the left-hand toolbar disappears until you need it.
    • Although, it is growing to become the second largest social network, boasting 190 million active members and a total of 390 million people who use its features such as video call in Gmail, Google+ can not currently beat the dominance of Facebook in this area.
  • Search
    • Similar to Siri “Search with Voice” allows the user to start a conversation.
    • You can send  emails, track your last searches, and create an event.
  • Hashtags
    • Competing with Twitter, #hashtags on  Google+ will start to appear automatically in your posts, which allows topics to be organized and easily found.
  • Music
    • Google has developed a monthly subscription for music, which is in direct competition with Spotify.
    • This new service allows individuals to stream tracks on Android devices and Web browsers for free.
  • Mobiles
    • Google launched the  Galaxy S4 by Samsung. Creating a new phone that combines Android with the best possible hardware available.
    • Why did Google choose not to launch a new version of the Android, as in previous years?
  • Maps
    • The new version of Maps features 3D buildings.
    • Google has also sought an additional way to earn revenue.  While using Google Maps, soon you can find deals by proximity to where you are located.
    • Starbucks and Hard Rock Cafe are the first restaurants to implement this new program.
  • Payments
    • Between Google+ users you use your email to send money.
    • Micropayments will be integrated between Gmail and Google Wallet.
    • PayPal now has some competition.
  • Instant Messenger
    • Android mobile Hangouts+ is available in the Google+ app.
    • This is a messaging system between users with text, photos and video calls available.
    • It also provides great sound and picture quality.
    • WhatsApp and Skype are not going to feel very comfortable when this becomes popular.
    • It is also available for Apple iOS.

Google  wants to corner the market and have everything in one. Well played.  Swipp it!

Cannes Film Festival – Lights, Camera, Schmooze

The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival opens today May 15, with the over -the- top and glamorous The Great Gatsby, the 3-D film by Australian director Baz Luhrmann and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulliagan, and Tobey Maguire.

Already in theaters for almost a week – The Great Gatsby may seem like it represents all that is the Cannes Film Festival – “glamorous,” “scandalous,” and teeming with only the “beautiful and wealthy.”  However, over the years the Cannes Film Festival, which does have an opulent prize tag, costing approximately €20m has come to also represent an event that is “historic,” “global,” and “significant” – showcasing more than 1,500 films from over 100 countries.  This particular festival has become an international market for those in all aspects of the film industry, who seek to buy and sell the next box office hit.

“This is the hardest 10 days of the year for me. There are always three or four movies that are exceptional and you have to find them so it is a detective job,” said Tom Bernard, co-president and co-founder of Sony Pictures Classics.

Founded in 1939 by Jean Zay Minister for Education and Fine Arts, the Cannes Film Festival began as an international cultural event in France that rivaled the Venice Film Festival.  The first offical Cannes Film Festival was held on September 20, 1946, shortly after World War II, and starting in 1952 has been held every May.  Cannes has debuted films from the most respected directors in the world, including Alfred Hitchcock (Notorious), Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird), Francis Ford Coppola (The Conversation and an unfinished Apocalypse Now), and Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver).  And, recently it has celebrated films like The Tree of Life,  The Artist, and Inglourious Basterds that have all been honored by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, better known as The Oscars.

The 2013 line-up of films have some exciting contenders with directors from not only the United States and France, but JapanChad, Mexico, Iran, and many more.  Here are a few films up for the Palme d’Or – the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival:

The Bling Ring – Directed by Sofia Coppola and Starring Emma Watson

As I Lay Dying – Directed and Starring James Franco

Will you see these films?  What are the chances that these films will be nominated for an Oscar?  Maybe one of these films will define a director’s career.  This is an exciting event, one that will start to have an impact come award season next year.

The Cannes Film festival will take place from May 15-26, 2013 and the complete list of contenders can be found here.
